NEW COTTAGE

JUDGEFORD / WELLINGTON / NEW ZEALAND

COMPLETED - JANUARY 2004

Background Brief

This cottage will eventually become the guest house once the main house is built but in the meantime is the first building on a newly developed lifestyle block north of Wellington

The brief was for a simple building containing two bedrooms and a small study.

Concept

The house is laid out under a single gable roof with an open plan living area to the west and bedrooms to the east.  Access to the bedrooms is by a glazed passage facing to the northeast.

At second gable forms an entry and covers the compact service areas to the west.

The end wall of the lounge is glazed with large sliding doors, enabling it to be fully opened up to the deck and lawn beyond.   This creates a seamless connection to the exterior.

The positioning of the house is such that these doors are able to be opened during typical northerly winds without disturbing the interior.

The house is orientated for good passive solar heating and incorporates large areas of floor to ceiling glazing to the north.  Internally a strip of exposed coloured concrete floor to the perimeter of the lounge provides thermal mass for absorption of solar energy.

The interior design was completed by the client and has created a sophisticated modern look within the rustic exterior.

Materials used on the exterior include ply and batten to the walls of the main form, with plaster to the entry gable and fire place.  Decking and exposed structural framing is in macrocarpa.

Result

This is a simple elegant two bedroom house that has been completed to a very high standard by the owner, a professional builder.

The design maximizes solar gain to create a warm and inviting home.
